| Kanapee (pronounced: 'káh-nah-peh') is a little café
in a small town, some might even call it a village, named Urfersheim in the Upper
Aisch Valley, Franconia
, Northern Bavaria, Southern Germany. Franconians are a people of their own. They
have their own dialect and pride themselves on being different from their better-known
Bavarian state-mates. The old Franconian dialect was quite heavily influenced
by French. Lots of French expressions were used in everyday life, though the spelling
was sometimes 'germanized'. Some have survived until today. Kanapee is one of
them. Picture a cozy, overstuffed couch, a little on the antique side, and you
see a Kanapee. Urfersheim belongs to the Illesheim community and is
located 'just outside the fence' of an American military facility Storck
Barracks . The town looks back on an interesting 1250-year-old history and
its name derives from 'urbares-heim', which means 'arable homestead'. The little
church amidst family farms and houses sports a unique Roman portal and a hidden
room underneath the church bells, which was used as a shelter by the town's people
in the Thirty Years' War and was freed from the dirt of the centuries by the town's
youth in 1989. If the average Franconian is sometimes perceived as a
bit unfriendly or introverted, put a good part of the blame on language problems,
be it with Foreigners or Germans. Franconian hospitality and cuisine are in a
class of their own. Our landscape is lovely, our soil is rich, our wines legendary
and our beer can hold its own against any Bavarian kind, not to mention the Northern
German types. Should you ever have a chance to visit Franconia, take
it and make sure you stop by our little café to enjoy traditional Franconian
food, delicious home-made cakes and a cozy family-like atmosphere. Come home to
Kanapee.
